The story of Ellis Piano is one that follows the American Dream. In 1983, David Ellis, aged 26, opened his store in a 1300 square foot location in Hoover Village, using borrowed money. The store was one of eight piano stores operating in Birmingham during the economically tough times of that year. The entire inventory then consisted of eleven vertical pianos and a single grand piano.

Today, as Ellis Piano continues into its third decade, the store has become the largest store in the Southeast, possibly one of the largest in the country.

Today the inventory includes over 120 grands, over 80 verticals and an impressive array of digitals. Piano selections include instruments from Bosendorfer, Schimmel, Kawai, Baldwin, Wurlitzer, Yamaha, Steinway, Mason & Hamlin, Kohler & Campbell, Story & Clark, Wyman, and Hazelton. Digitals on the floor are from Roland, Yamaha, Korg, Alesis, and Kawai.

As in any successful growth, Ellis Piano has experienced many expansions. After two years, the store had become one of the top 50 Wurlitzer dealerships in the country. A year later, the store doubled its square footage. In 1988, David Ellis was selected as a "Top 40 Businessman Under Age 40" by the Birmingham Business Journal. By the following year Ellis Piano again doubled its size, growing to over a 6000 square foot area. A further expansion carried the Hoover Village location to over 13,000 square feet, representing over half of the entire Center.

In 1996, the company grew more when it moved to the present location. With 28,000 square feet available, Ellis has been able to showcase hundreds of instruments, giving customers a wide range from which to choose.

Today Ellis Piano works hard to maintain its present position by offering a large selection of top quality products, backed by top notch service. The Dream continues with David Ellis and his staff determined to satisfy their customers' needs.
